It’s 9pm Friday 27th June, day 7 of my London experience. This morning I got up early and headed out early to Devonshire Square where the second Airstream for Street Kitchen is based. I was very early so I went to the Banana Shack and had a carrot, ginger, beetroot, apple and celery juice. I’ve never had a vegetable juice before, but I’m hooked now!
At Street Kitchen the ethos is that all meat used is sourced as locally as possible, with each protein coming from a different supplier. They focus mainly on braising, brines and slow cooked meats for better flavour and cheaper cost (for them and the consumer).
All the food produced aims to be delicious and natural – good honest food. An average day sees 150 customers at the Airstream. All food for both Airstreams is prepped at base in Battersea, where they also do food for large functions. I was based here yesterday to get a taste of the prep kitchen.
Consistency is key for these guys as their clientele are mostly regulars, “suits” working in the area. There are no set sections in the prep kitchen but the boys have an unspoken flow of prep distribution.
Today I got to try the “Buffalo Bill burger” which is only available on Fridays. This consists of pickled onions, lettuce, burger patty, mustard mayo, cheese and ketchup enclosed in a toasted brioche bun. The idea is to have a classic burger, with no “out there” ingredients, just mastering the basics.
The Airstream at the Devonshire Square location is only 6 months old, so a little less popular than their other location, and they’re still trying to build up clientele from the nearby big banks and businesses around it, so a fairly quiet lunch service today, which meant I could rock out of there at 2pm.
So I headed home, put on a bit of lippy, then headed back out to the Dalston Yard Street Feast. I heard about this through Georgia, who was my photographer the other day, she recommended it and I’m so glad she did! So this street festival runs for 20 weekends per year over the summer consisting of a variety of pop up restaurants with the best of the best street food.
I was lucky as this weekend’s line up was really fantastic. I started the evening by heading to Tequila Burrito. They serve very popular frozen margaritas, and they were delicious, really got me in the mood to try some street food.
The first thing that caught my eye was the twisted Indian street food, including the Goan pulled pork taco. It was delicious, far more flavoursome than I had expected, so many flavours in there.
Next I went up to Breddos Tacos and had some chicken and beef tacos.
After another visit to Tequila Burrito, I made my way to Rambos, a healthier alternative to the pop ups offering gyoza – this was traditionally a Chinese dumpling or “pot sticker” until the Japanese took it over, and now it’s theirs!
So mine was chicken and green tea gyoza, with an asian slaw, candied peanuts and salted edamame beans. A real treat.
And then yes, there was more! Sorbitium make all their sorbets locally in Acton and the two flavours I had were peanut butter and jelly, and of course salted caramel. The colours were quite dull to be honest and I wasn’t expecting much, but once I got into it they just tasted so authentic. The sorbets don’t have any additives in there, it’s just all natural, and just tasted amazing!
So Street Feast Dalston Yard was definitely a 10/10 for me. It’s my day off tomorrow and I am searching for an amazing place to go out for dinner, so I’ll keep you posted.
